Contexto: The regulatory environment for financial regulation is quite different in Australia and New Zealand resulting in contrasting elements in the proposals. While in both countries, the regulations surrounding financial institutions emphasize financial stability, the Australian arrangements also provide a degree of depositor protection through the preferential treatment of domestic depositors. In New Zealand, the onus for assessing and bearing risk is placed on the individual depositor.

Nota

The use in English of the term "depositor" to denote not only bank users who hold deposit accounts but all users having some funds in a bank, in most cases a positive balance in a current account, is not paralleled in Spanish to the same extent. In contexts referring to bank failures, which is when the English usage proliferates, Spanish normally employs "clientes" or "usuarios". This is purely a matter of usage; all users of Spanish banking services are technically depositors wherever their money is held, but the expression "depositante" is normally reserved for customers who have at least one account primarily to earn interest, normally a minority of the bank's total customers.
